In 1949, President Harry Truman declared February 1 as National Freedom Day, commemorating the day in 1865 that Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution proposing a Constitutional amendment prohibiting slavery in the United States — what would become the Thirteenth Amendment. National Freedom Day was a precursor to Black History Day, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford formally recognized February as Black History Month. This Resource Spotlight celebrates the history of freedom in the United States in tandem with Black History Month, recognizing that for many in this country’s history, freedom was not guaranteed. In celebrating 250 years of the United States this year, we encourage you to discuss the history of “freedom” and what it means to be “free” with your students. On January 30, 2026, the CSMP hosted our Universal Transitional Kindergarten conference, Playful Foundations. Held in San Diego in partnership with the CRLP’s SEL into Literature conference, the event was a huge success. With a sold-out crowd of TK educators filling the rooms, Playful Foundations affirmed a shared excitement and growing need for spaces where teachers can connect, learn, and exchange best practices in TK instruction. Geraldine Portica might have known the risks every day when she wore a dress. In a 1917 portrait, she wears a dress and a wide-brimmed hat. She stands with one hand on her hip as her other hand extends the loose fabric of her skirt as if to show its cut. A handwritten note on the photo's bottom margin explains that she had lived her whole life as female since her birth in Mexico. That year, San Francisco police identified Portica as male and charged her under the city’s anti-cross-dressing law passed in 1863.
